Case Study - Allvac Heat Treatment Furnace

In 2003 ATI Allvac Limited, a British subsidiary of Allegheny Technologies Inc of the USA, required a new heat treatment furnace for the processing of aerospace alloy bars for their new production facility at the Cyclops Works in Sheffield, UK.

This furnace was required to meet the stringent performance parameters demanded by their customers in the aerospace industry such as Rolls Royce, Westland and SNECMA.

Energy and Environmental Services Ltd were selected to supply this furnace thanks to their innovative solutions to the needs of the new furnace and their long experience in furnace and combustion system design.

The furnace has a working chamber 7500 mm long x 2400 mm wide x 1500 mm high, having four burners arranged along each side configured in to a three temperature control zone arrangement. The furnace working temperature is from 350 to 1170°C being required to comply with the technical standards of temperature uniformity at ± 5°C at less than 750°C and ± 10°C at or above that.

The furnace was commissioned in early 2004 and following rigorous testing by Allvac has been seen to operate well within the specified temperature parameters and fulfilled all performance expectations.
